Allergic Reaction to EOS Lip Balm: Their 'Natural' Ingredients Under Scrutiny - Kristen Arnett
Allergic reaction to the EOS lip balm: its ingredients 'Natural' under scrutiny The brand of lip balm, EOS, has recently come under FDA fire, in addition to a large group of furious consumers who have filed a demand for balms that remember Easter eggs caused severe adverse reactions of the skin. Photos of women and girls who were using EOS Lip Balm showing (more graphic) allergic reactions of red, dry, fractured, blistering, and swollen lips and skin around the mouth are all over the Internet, as the news continues to spread. (We are choosing not to publish them here, but you can easily search for the images.) I was surprised more than a little when I saw the dermatologists calling the beeswax wax as the main suspect, alleging that one of the components of the bees wax, propolis, has been related to skin reactions. Beeswax has been successfully used for centuries in topical herbal salts and balms, as well as in natural skin care products. What is really causing the allergic reaction to the EOS labial balm? I've spent years making skin care, so when I read the ingredients of EOS Lip Balm, I found some highly suspicious skin irritants that would be much more likely to cause so extreme allergic outbreaks. And based on what happened to my girls when their lips had a reaction similar to those of the demand for class action against EOS, I think there is much more to discover about this "natural" brand here. To be clear, I did not make formal scientific evidence about these products (but probably EOS would not be sued by so many people). High concentration of natural flavorEOS claims to use 99% of natural ingredients, but when reviewing the ingredient cover, the big red flag I saw was "natural flavoring" among the top five ingredients in the list. When an ingredient is so high on the list, it means a high percentage of it was used. A high concentration of natural flavor means a high concentration of many potentially irritating ingredients. A unique flavor additive can contain hundreds of individual components, any of which can cause a potential reaction. Labeling laws do not require these individual ingredients to be revealed, so there is no way to know that the product contains something that a consumer is allergic. A unique flavor additive can contain hundreds of individual components, any of which can cause a potential reaction. Labeling laws do not require these individual ingredients to be revealed, so there is no way to know that the product contains something that a consumer is allergic. Natural flavor is not (necessarily) Sure or even NaturalYep – it is true, and so frustrating that consumers are deceived over and over by this term. As a formulator myself, I know that "natural" does not always mean natural when it comes to flavors and fragrances. Many of the additives and perfumes used to make the natural flavor contain synthetic components. Many of the additives and perfumes used to make the natural flavor contain synthetic components. Natural not always equal security nor Many of the commentators who were experts in the press release and articles declared that more than once was a reproof. They love to use poison ivy as a classic example. Sure it's true: natural is not necessarily safer, but there's more than that. Flavored lip balls Increase the risk of skin irritation in two shapes#1 Lamer When a lipstick smells and knows like candy, people are more likely to lick their lips. Saliva contains enzymes intended to decompose substances as part of the digestive process. Too saliva, mixed with other potentially irritating ingredients on the lips, causes chemical exfoliation, which is too hard for the delicate lip area.#2 Overuse FDA noted that overuse was one of its greatest concerns, because packages are not labeled with any precaution or usage guidelines associated with frequency or quantity. The constant and thick reapplication of a product that contains even a small amount of an irritating or allergenic ingredient is obviously a bad idea. Vitamin C is not as safe as you thinkI also noticed that products contain vitamin C, which can be irritating of the skin and is photosensitizing (i.e., it has a bad reaction in the sun). Many people throw themselves on the lip balm when they go out in the sun, but if that lip balm contains photosensitizing ingredients such as vitamin C, the lips are at greater risk of damage from UV radiation. Possible Allergy to Coconut OilAlthough coconut oil is loved by many, it is not good for everyone. For many with already dry or sensitive skin, applying it can cause greater dryness and sensitivity if not absorbed properly (and dehydrated skin often has absorption problems). Inappropriate absorption (or simply the application too much in the first place) can make coconut oil form an occlusive layer on the surface, which can suffocate and also potentially lead other irritating ingredients more on the skin. Coconut oil is also considered a tree walnut, so EOS lip products should have been labeled as containing tree nuts, which did not, as the FDA pointed out. Same thing happened to my kids. My children received balms of EOS lips in their Christmas (a relative's) stock this year, and after reading the ingredients, I let them enjoy the balms they obtained for Christmas; although I had to avoid them surviving on numerous occasions (sometimes the really good EOS lips balms—must be all that added to flavor). When we left on vacation, my girls used balms for over a week. Towards the end of the trip I realized that his lips seemed quite cracked. I attributed it to the fact that they were licking their lips a lot because the balm knew well, and that they might react to something in the water, air, or sheets where they were. They continued to use the balms, and their lips continued to worsen in dryness and roughness, so I confessed to the balms (a lot to their dismay). Shortly after I got home, I saw the news about EOS's demand and the same allergic reactions others were experiencing. I'm sure it wasn't Beeswax who used the allergic reaction to EOS lip balm for my daughters. I've been doing my family's lipsticks, as well as other skin care and personal care products for more than 5 years. Most contain organic bee wax. No one in my family has reacted in any way to any of my bees containing products. I can say with great confidence that Beeswax was not the culprit here. Is it possible that bee wax was a problem for some people? Sure. Most people who choose not to use bee wax in their products do so because they prefer a vegan product. But I think there were a lot more suspects on the ingredient decks. Was it you one of the people who burned down EOS's lipstick, too? Do you think they should have been under greater scrutiny by the FDA before going to the market without proper warnings? Please tell me about it if you were in the comments below! Join the discussion 74 Comments Over the past month I have been fighting with an eruption around my lips and back and forth with an allergist I found the culprit to be the lip balm of the EOS Sorbeta. I threw it away and I hope this eruption goes on its own. I've been using Eos' lipstick for about two months and this week my lips are so dry and crispy. The sides of my mouth will get bad enough to bleed a little. The worst thing is that it hurts to smile or open my mouth wide. I'm a smiling guy, so he made me sad. I received one (sorbet of raspberry) as a small gift recently and as another one that commented, not bought oneself due to the size and shape of the container. I was happy to taste it so delicious & I remembered my childhood with the flavored balms of Lip Smacker! After a couple of days I noticed that I had a burning and spicy feel on the inner sides of my lips. I thought I was reacting to something I had eaten or drank and tried to fix it. I have a huge sensitivity to toothpaste and my mouth burns so it wasn't totally weird for me to experience, but I noticed it was slightly different. It was so painful that I stopped using the EOS, as it was so recently introduced that I thought it might be the culprit. I went to Vaseline and after several days it started to clear up. I went out to look for more Vaseline lipstick to help with recovery and met EOS and noticed that they were organic and all natural (the mine did not come with the packaging... as a Costco and re-enrolled part). I thought if what you say is true, it should be okay so I started using it again just to find out the pain I had come back and my lips were peeling and all over burning again! I couldn't drink certain things – especially if they were charred as it burned!! Today I decided to find out if someone had a reaction to EOS and found his article. He was a God sent and I am very grateful to have read and many other comments. So happy to have discovered before too long what the subject was and will no longer be using this product and will be sure to warn others who have it or are interested in buying! Hi. It only took me a few days to use the EOS lipstick to find out that there must be a problem with them since the reaction I had was so severe. I bought a pack of 6 in Costco and gave me some as gifts and kept the perfumed balms of sweet and chamomile for myself. Within a week my lips and the area of the outside mouth were cut, burned and swollen. I thought I'd look online to see if someone else was having a problem and that's when I found your blog/website. I appreciate you spreading the word, as I would not have known so quickly what was causing this severe reaction and now I will pass this information to others. Thank you. Greetings, MarciOne day I felt that my lips became very careless. I took one of my EOS lips balms, put it on my lips waiting for me to help. I know that the bare-mint balm broke on my lips when I first used it, but I thought it was just for the bare-lipped balm just that my lips were allergic too. What had happened when I used the mint was that my lips became even more caress, stinging on the soft skin of my lips, as well as the skin around my lips, and puss formed from the cracks when smiling. It was so embarrassing to get out to the public when it seemed like that. I was able to heal my lips with burtas and/or essential oils – young bald of living lips. Well, I used to use EOS lipstick a few years ago. In less than two months after I started my lips they developed a terrible allergic reaction. At first I had no idea what was causing it, I thought it was something in my diet so I decided to cut a lot of things. My lips got worse, blisters everywhere, breaking and peeling much more than usual even during the summer, then started the bleeding, it was horrible and I didn't know what to do. I bought medicated creams for the lips but I kept using the EOS lipstick still didn't realize why I had such a horrible allergic reaction and then this happened; the lipstick I was wearing was almost finished so I threw it out planning to buy another one in the next few days. Well, during the days I wasn't using any lipstick my lips got better and the medication I was using for my lips started working. That's when I realized that it was EOS products that I've been using that caused my lips to almost disappear, it took me months to notice what was going on. Seriously, all his lipstick completely ruined my lips and I was so addicted to them. I never bought her products again. I've been using Burt's bees since then and I have no problem. I don't know about your hand lotions and other products but your lipstick line is a complete fraud. Be careful when using your products. What medical cream did you get for your lips? I'm not sure how old this post is, but my daughter teacher told him not to use it and I thought that was interesting. He said he had an allergic reaction. Then two years ago my lips flew and it was five times the size. I threw it a light blue pepper and never used it again. Best luck for all! LizActually, bee wax can cause allergic reaction. It is actually the composite propolis that is found in bee products – it is the "glue" that bees produce to build their hives. I learned that after about 5 years of terrible breaks in my face that were impossible to clarify that the propolis was the culprit causing my chest dermatitis. I've got it for honey! However, after I stopped eating honey and cleaning my skin (6 weeks of very strong antibiotic), I came out only to discover that it was a new natural lip product that I had started to use. Now I have to see all the products: hair, skin, makeup and food that can have honey contained in them. It's caused by an allergy in my case. Yes I agree - I am not sure why there is so much suspicion about the company and its disclosure on other ingredients. I can't use anything of Bite Beauty or many lipstick like Carmex and Burt bees, and there are even some lips that my lips had reacted badly, and the only common ingredient is always beeswax wax. It is a known allergen and should definitely be considered guilty by anyone who has adverse reactions. I used an EOS tube for the first time in December of last year and the only reason I hadn't tried it before was because it came in egg-shaped container, the tube is much better size and since I'm a bit addicted to chapstick/lipbalm I thought big, another variety. It only took a couple of hours since I used it to start feeling that my lips are swollen and eventually led to a severe peeling and rash, I never thought it was caused by EOS. I stopped using EOS and started using Vaseline because that's the only thing that helped control the hair and bleeding. Yesterday I found my EOS tube and my lips were dry and without thinking that I used it and within 15 minutes my lips were stinging and swollen, I found the culprit! Now almost 12 hours later, the lips are still swollen and dry, so I've used the Vaseline again. I know it's not the bee wax, I have no problem with Burt bees, there must be something else and since I've used Stevia in food, I'm not sure if that's the cause or if it reacts differently because it's applied topically. I'm going to report this to the FDA since I found your number on a website about a previous lawsuit that occurred in 2016. I wonder if I could start a new lawsuit? Same for me. The original was the only thing that worked for my severely dry and sensitive lips. He had the allergic reaction and it took me a few days to think it was the bear. I traveled the Internet and found a couple of years before there was a class action demand and they changed the formula thanks to Mike Wong. Trying to cut corners, but I would have gladly paid a higher price if the only reason was because the natural ingredients were limited or had a bad harvest. Whatever the case, who goes and changes the formula in a product that made your company?! The founders should never have let them get into the original formula. After that I went through all my local stores and bought all the original formulas. I have a pretty pile of sticks that I don't even know will work. I hope they bring the original formula before everyone leaves. Or sell the formula or give it to the public as they no longer use it. For more than a year I have treated with an eruption / blisters above and below my lips, super-slashed, dry, peeled, swelling, etc. I thought it was sulphate, so I stopped drinking wine, I thought it was my cat, reincarnated it, thought it was seafood, melons, etc. but I never discovered it. I went to the general doctor who put me on steroids to clear it up (even ran a herpes test lol). I went to an allergist who did patch tests, nothing. Then he went to a dermatologist who said he kept a food diary and gave him a special drug stick. I had good weeks and then horrible weeks. It wasn't until I had dinner with a friend who mentioned my lip, problem (I was having a bad week of lips) and she asked if Eos used it. Well, I had an EOS at work and one at home that I would use periodically. I loved it! I've never associated my rash/blisters with EOS. I went home that night, and I threw her and the one at work too. It's been more than three weeks, still cold outside and my lips are much better! This time I think I finally discovered my lip problem. I'm glad I can eat seafood, melon and drink wine. Although I miss my cat. Dogs and husband are happy. His new owner loves him to make it all work. Wow, Jackie, that's the whole story. I'm so glad your friend was able to be the one who discovered mystery to you after all you've been through. Thank you for sharing! Very similar to what I've been through. In March 2018 I used a lip balm EOS, I used it for about 3 weeks, and I stopped because it seemed my lips were more cracked. My lips were chopped and I had a rash like ampoules in my lower lip first then my upper lip. And now it's April 1st and I still can't get rid of the swollen lips of the itching. I've been using Vaseline as crazy. Carmex made them burn, so I only apply Vaseline almost every hour. I don't know what else to do to cure my lips. People look at me crazy like I have fever blisters, but I know I don't have them. I let my daughter use EOS too and she loved him but I threw them all away! I need help... I saw your post – they've been having a flare with my lips recently. I have a nut allergy and when I eat a walnut, my lips break down and I get a severe indigestion for 8-10 hours. I used my husband's stick and my lips started to flash – I figured I had eaten nuts and contaminated it so I started having a problem. I went out and bought an EOS since I used it before... I'm not sure that EOS is now a problem, but I'm commenting because I talked to a doctor who labels it "Contact Dermatitis" – allergic reaction to something topical. They put a steroid pill on me, and in hours I had relief. I wanted to pass it if you could find relief, too. At least your GP performed the test without simply jumping to the conclusion and marking your medical history permanently with a "sexually transmitted disease" despite emphatic dispute over your evaluation and letting you know that your diagnosis was impossible to be the cause and that you needed to take what it said seriously and look for other causes. Then automatically wanted to jump to "an even worse diagnosis" [I can only assume he was suggesting HIV; clearly he had negative assumptions about any young man who came into practice, disgusting, he was just DISGUSTING!] He even wrote a recipe for anything herpes medication is without even knowing if his evaluation was even correct, horrible medical practice! There's no need to say that I never picked it up and I wasn't about to ingest something I knew would never help and who knows, it would most likely have been dangerous. After running through the real possibilities myself from the real cause possible, I realized that EOS was the only new thing, by stopping the use and throwing it out, the eruption began to clear within 24 hours, (but the chemical shell was beginning). I called our regular GP to let her know what her partner did and asked for the graphic to be corrected, she fully agreed that it was not herpes [or worse], but rather an allergic reaction. However, he said he could not clarify the chart without now making a test because of the new changes in medical report that entered into play with the ACA! How is that for modern medicine, a completely backward way to practice!! So now medical practice is to make a diagnosis without any confirmed evidence, but when the wrong diagnosis is very clearly, one must now take a test to confirm that they did it wrong, huh? It makes you never want to go to another doctor again with its horrible attitudes and lack of care and Nilly Willy writing dangerous recipes for non-existent diseases that has now blocked your medical history for life! (Don't trust statistics on sexually transmitted diseases knowing they don't really test, just jump to false conclusions!) Now it's a lawsuit waiting for it to happen on many fronts thanks to EOS! @ Dee - That sounds traumatic! I'm so sorry your bed style was so terrible. I've never been excited about EOS but now I have solid reasons why! Good work with this information, Rachael! I've been using EOS mint balm and I've discovered that I've developed an allergic reaction. My lips are cracked and cracked in the corners of my mouth. They burn to open or eat more just as they sit around. Serious pain... I've been suffering for the last 18 months after an allergic reaction to the EOS lip balm. I had used it in the summer of 2016 and my lips began to shine and peel as a result. I've even developed excema on my lips (something I've never had before in my life). I'm actually experiencing patch tests right now and, yes, it's officially confirmed that I'm allergic to EOS. I wish I'd seen this link before I started using the product. It's been a year and a half of pure torture! I've been spending 3 years for me too now. I'm so low... I have good days and anything can change it to bad day. My makeup's on hold. I haven't used a lipstick since these three years. However, it is not clearing. The dermatologist says the condition seems permanent. It's clear with steroids. But it keeps resorting to everything and everything, changing climate, facial creams, soap, anything. I'm healing the day I tried eosDealing with this now.... I hadn't heard of the problems with EOS... and kept a stick on my desk for months used almost daily without problems. I found an egg-shaped balm that was in my beauty bag that I received as a product of promo of an event in which I was and used it for the first time when time cooled... my lips began to feel like a sandpaper about a day later and they didn't get better. Of course I keep reapplying thinking it was the dry air of winter... then one day. I woke up with swollen lips and blisters and that's when I realized it could be the EOS. So, I stopped using and decided to try to use the Medicated carmex. Burt's bees... nothing helped. I tried Vaseline and that worked a lot better... one day I was in the car and my lips felt dry and all I had was a Blistex stick for that night my lips were blistering again and praying... I woke up with crispy lips. I already have eczema and I definitely think this is contact dermatitis... the only thing that helps is Vaseline. So I'll hold on to that and I won't use any lipstick ever again. None of these reactions happened until I started using that EOS. Therefore, I think whatever is done with the beginning of a chain reaction and anything that is similar to that formula makes my skin have an allergic reaction. My daughter, now 19 has an allergic reaction to EOS Lip Balm as well. He started using them often when they became popular a few years ago. The reaction was not immediate, but it started after a few months of continued use. His lips were swollen, red, whipped and blisters around the edges. At the same time I was seeing a dermatologist for the acne. The poor girl had enough to deal with this and then it happened. It was me, his mother who finally realized that the culprit was EOS. The dermatologist didn't even ask about balms of lips, etc. By process of elimination and after testing the ointments of hydrocortisone and such eventually the symptoms were gone. It was a terrible test. A few months later I saw the news articles about others who had the same reaction. Seeing photos, etc confirmed what he had suspected. I'll never use the products again, nor buy them for anyone else. Unbelievable! I'm 75 years old, I never had a problem with dry and cut lips. I applied Chapstick during the day and Vaseline smooth at bedtime, and everything was fine — until a couple of weeks ago when I bought an Eos Organic Stick Lip Balm tube. After a few days, my lower lip dried and broke, and the skin began to peel to the point that the lip was bleeding. You might think there's no logical reason for me to do that. Dry Googled, cut lips and up jumped his report (and several others). Only then did I begin to suspect the lipstick. I have never been one to have many allergic reactions, but the moment was certainly right in this case. Thank you so much for this post! An hour ago I bought some EOS (first time I tried it). The skin around my upper lip immediately became dyed and swollen, and now I have small red strokes in that area. I had no idea that EOS could cause this reaction until I did an Internet search and found this article. I'm glad I'm not the only one (but it's horrible how many people are suffering from this)! Thank you, Rachel, I'd never think of looking at my lipstick for my lipsticks. The burt bees caused a rupture of blisters, so stop using it and my lips healed. I just bought an Eos vanilla egg, and my lips are red, swollen, and have bleach blisters in them.. I have an allergy to fake sugars, and Stevia gives me hives. They could be additives, it could be be bees wax, who knows? A corset and neosporine seems to be the only thing I can use in my mouth.. This may seem odd, but I really think it's the Stevia. I know stevia is natural, but it's also something we haven't been exposed to a lot until recently. I just made it up because I had a reaction to EOS a year ago and stopped using it. I figured it was one of the many natural ingredients, even though I know I'm not allergic to anything. Then last month I decided to use Listerine Naturals, the clear mouthwash. After a few days my lips began to feel the same as when I had been using EOS. When I stopped using it, my lips returned to normal. I looked at the ingredients for both of them and the only one they have in common is Stevia. Looks like a strange coincidence. A month ago I started using the EOS lipstick. I was doing it while I was sitting in ICU with my mom, along her funeral soon after, and I couldn't find out why my lips felt so pained and swollen. There were no notable blisters and they didn't seem strangely swollen or anything so I threw it into a soft dehydration because I had been so busy with my mother, funeral planning, etc. I was just not drinking enough water. Two days ago, I have a wound in the lower lip. It still didn't occur to me that I could be the lipstick until I went to apply it today and noticed that a huge cast was developed right in the middle of it. In the trash that was. Not happy. But at least I know it wasn't my imagination and I'm not losing my mind. First, my sincere condolences for the loss of his mother. I'm so glad you found it out and I hope this has been helpful. If I were you, I would also contact the company to let them know the problem. Thank you for the comment, and I wish you well, Natasha. I only noticed that my upper lip swells when I use the balm of EOS Lip! I'm more than crazy! I have to walk with carmex whipped on my lips due to the allergic reaction of EOS! I hope this happens quickly. I have the same reaction when I use EOS. I threw it in the trash. I'm having the same problem except it's my lower lip that swells and burns. I loved EOS, but I finally realized I could be the culprit. All my EOS goes to the trash. This is my first time here and I read so many stories and experiences that I can relate totally to. I couldn't help but join and share. ? It happens that I received one from a friend and used to make my lips dryer, run over, and they felt they were about to peel. I also have sensitive skin and used to dry my skin around. Even under my nose area. I stopped using it and threw it after 10(+/-5) applications in 15-20 days. I hope this helps. I'm pretty sure it's Jojoba's oil and after some research I doubt much that it's Jojoba's oil. It must contain some additives or has been refined too many times. I also had a negative reaction to Balmi Lip Balm and Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil and they all contain Jojoba Oil, these two balm stripped and dried my lips and become very pained and sore but EOS gave me blisters! all over my mouth after only 6 uses! Oh, my God! I just found my EOS in a drawer a few days ago, I used it and now I have blisters in my mouth too. I look like a coward, but he's bothering me! I went to the doctor the first time this happened and they had no idea what happened and neither did I. We even tried for herpes type 1 and it was negative for my surprise. This time I know what he did. Is there anything you can do to get him off? It's almost comparable to poison ivy. Apparently I'm allergic to EOS, too. I'd like a remedy. I work with the public and I can't miss the weird lips. Please help. I'm so glad I looked at this! I also have an allergic reaction to EOS lipobalm. After years of using Vaseline lip therapy, I changed or Burts Bees, which doesn't last, and frankly it wasn't that big. Ten, I tried EOS. The first "egg" didn't bother me, but it ran away, so I bought a tasteful mint. This caused the burn, and the little blows. I want a remedy. You cannot afford to sue, and you will consider it a loss. But please. If there's a remedy I'd like to hear from him. Thank you. Yes! Now I've been able to realize what's causing my horrible lip reaction I've been having for the last few months. Googled eos lip balm and I saw that I am not alone! I wonder if those who are suing will be able to get answers to what is exactly the ingredient that is guilty of so many allergic reactions. This would be so useful for those of us affected to avoid it in the future. As many have already said, the blistering and the oozing of the reaction of the lips lasts almost a week. It feels awful and ruins my entire week when it happens. Thank you for sharing all this information. They sure win their suit and the ingredient is exposed! I'm having the same reaction I did when I used a Burt bee product several years ago. I contacted the number in the package and all 6 would tell me I was gonna stop using it. I thought it was sensitive to the natural oils of the product. But now with the same thing that happens while using EOS, I'm sad you have to change products again. I'll go back to the brightness of Bath and Body Works. I started using EOS recently for a week and noticed that I had dried my lips. Three days ago, my lips swollen and broke very badly where my lips bleed. I stopped using EOS the day that swollen only after my niece informed me about the demand for class action. I've used all kinds of lip balm before and I never had any trouble with any of them. Which could be causing my lips to swell and feel like a sandpaper. My lips are constantly red and sensitive. I've used coconut oil before without any trouble, so there's something else in EOS that's causing my lips to be swollen for days. What can I do to solve my swollen lips? I stopped using EOS 3 days ago and went and bought a new lipstick called Cera Ve with the active ingredient of gasoline. I hope this helps relieve my swollen lips. Is this case still under investigation? Of course, never buy one again for anyone I know. My boyfriend brought this home last night. I used it once and now I stopped after getting dry red patches on my face around my mouth... and reading this article. a Anyway I already used it once, and a reaction within qin hours I have an allergy to the tree walnut and I did not know that the EOS lipstick used coconut oil. I thought it was necessary for the FDA to label products with allergens? I've used this balm for a few years, but recently I started to have an allergic reaction. At first, I had gotten dry lips that began to break. I continued to apply the balm, and I guess because of the cracks opened the coconut oil allowed a deeper penetration under my skin and caused the red swollen lips and itching. Since then I have changed Aquaphor by my cut lips that work wonders. I'm using EOS 6 months and now my mouth is choking what I should do? Stop using? I'm sorry about my English that I'm from Poland. Thank you for sharing this! I bought this lipstick 3 days ago and my lips and skin around them are swollen and red. They almost have a feeling of sand paper. Alternative I am an avid user of chapstick (addicted to the border line) and I have never had such a problem. I was using EOS before and suddenly one day my lips began to burn, swollen and little rashes everywhere. I didn't suspect the EOS, but I stopped using it because I thought maybe they started using the chamomile there that I'm allergic to. It took me a week for the lips to return to normal. I was out of my usual lip balm and I used some EOS that I had put last week and Bam! They've turned their burning lips. Knowing that I used the EOS that I went online and found out about the lawsuit and this article. Thank you! Now I realize that I am not the only person who has suffered the use of this product. I threw them in the trash, but still dealing with unhappy lips. Oh! I have very pained lips to use the EOS lipstick: (I used it before, starting in 2016 at some point, and never "noticed" any negative side effect to stop. Read the various online experiences, I think I've always had symptoms. However, they never got so bad where I can say that my lips hurt, even the interior lipstick sometimes reacted, never thought it was the lipstick. It started with what some people call "baby acne". Then he spread to a red eruption while using more of the EOS thinking he only needed hydration. My lips have not stopped burning, and the rash is around my mouth where my upper mouth is slightly swollen. I stopped using it now for a whole day, still sore. I used Labello earlier, now Nivea where the balm "color"lip was quite dry, but I don't remember this kind of reaction. The polysporin lips balm was the last product about 6 years ago that affected my lips like EOS, but my lips were very swollen with it. What are these manufacturers putting in their products to cause allergic reactions from consumers?! The government needs to start doing something before complaints have to reach "high" levels of action. I've been using eos lipstick for a while. Now my lips are constantly burning and they feel like they're on fire. I told my doctor that I had recommended a dermontologist to help me now. My daughter brought me a balm of his lips for my birthday in August. At first I had no problem. In September I started using it more, because I am a teacher, and speaking all day, while I was in a dryer environment, it made me feel the need for it. My lips were more and more whipped, and my mouth too, which made me use balm constantly. Yesterday, my lips were covered with small blisters, and I had two sores in my tongue. I mentioned it to one of my advanced art classes, as I drew the lipstick to apply it. One of my students said, "That's what's causing it! My mom had the same reaction!" I decided to find him, and I found so many others with the same experience. I realized that even my throat was sore! Today, my tongue and my throat are already better since I stopped using the balm immediately yesterday. My lips are still sore as they peeled into new skin. I've been applying oil jelly, and I hope they're better soon. I am also allergic to this, I applied a little in my upper lip and my lip began to sew and be swollen. I realized it was an allergic reaction and it was very scary. I had to use ice cubes to keep my lips from hurting and help me. I don't recommend using those anyway because they try animals. I used my stuff and stuffed it with someone else and used it like that. It works for me and I hope I can find out what I'm allergic to in the balm. When I meant it works for me, I meant the ones I filled. My experience is similar to many published here. I've been using EOS for months when suddenly my lips began to peel and are extra dry along the edges. I thought I was dehydrated, so I started drinking more water and applying more of the lip balm. I finally discovered it and returned to Carmex. I don't understand how a product can start working well and then it gets bad! You don't understand how because you don't understand how the acquisition of organic raw materials works. Most organic bees in the US come from Canada. But they have winter and this source dries during that time. During the winter, distributors have to come from other places like India. The formula for lip balm is the same, but the place that some of the raw materials are cultivated can change. The new Indian supplier can refine your organic wax slightly different, and the final result may be that your bee wax contains more propolis than the Canadian supplier. More propilis means more people will have an allergic relationship. Bees are also pollinizing different varieties of plants. This changes the wax makeup and can be allergic to one of those plants. All I just said is why this whole article is written by ignorance. Great, you make lipstick. But where you get your wax and how it is processed are variables that you are not taking into account. So to say it's not the bee wax is an assumption based on any real evidence. It's okay, though because you said you're not a scientist, so you don't have to be responsible. To the anonymous poster of this comment, it is well to disagree, to have arguments about the information provided. While you may even be totally fine, please check your tone. This site will not support nastiness as there is absolutely no need for your point, especially someone who does not want to provide a real name. I would never have known the difference in abeeswax..thank you for this comment, because some bees bother me and some do not.. I agree with this person. A few years ago, I was using Burts The lipstick for a while and my lips crack, break, and crude. Finally he did some research on the ingredients and found that the formula had bee wax in it. I found reputable information about propolis in honey and wax products and it was not sufficiently filtered out of the bee wax in some products. Now that I looked around and found the little Vaseline bathtubs that don't have bees wax, my lips healed. During the following years, I have tried a variety of other products including lipstick and balm that had beeswax wax and again my lips were cut and dry and crude very quickly. Now that it seems to me that I am sensitized to this, my lips and around my mouth and inside my mouth it gets raw and dry and pained when like honey or use any honey-related product. I think it's necessary what NameWithNoMan has said about bee supplies. And once they sit on these substances, they can have worse and worse reactions with more exposures to these substances. I'm sure you do. Oh, my God, I'm so happy to find this article! I got the blisters after I used those a couple months ago, I stopped using it and my lips returned to normal. Today was the only balm I could find and use it on a pinch and I already have blisters!! Unbelievable. Thank you for this article! A year ago my lips felt very painful and began to get extremely dry. I tried all kinds of lip balm without relief. I was 17 weeks pregnant at the time and had just left the hospital because of a heavy bleeding of a blood clot in my uterus. I thought my excessively dry lips were related to stress and my OB had no idea why it was happening. It took me two months to go back to normal. Here I am a year later, and starting with the same symptoms again, only worse.... painful lips, extreme dryness, tiny blisters, and itching. Guess what? I started using EOS a few days ago and I realized that I first used it a year ago! I wish I had googled symptoms of allergic reaction to the balms of lips before! Sadly, I have blisters too. It started as a bit spicy, but quickly got blisters and crusts. At the worst moment, the lips crumbled and became yellowish. When it heals, the lips dripped saliva as crazy. He obviously had to stay home. Although it must be sunburn and change to Lipsyl. After two weeks, I returned to EOS last night and today I have blisters again, so I decided to investigate. Oof. Thank God I know what it is now. I've just discovered in the last 48 hours that I'm one of these people experiencing this reaction. I don't lick balm and I've never had any bad reaction to chapstick in the past. I've even made my own bee wax capstick. However I never add to savor and only prefer mint if it has any flavor in it. I am really disappointed with the brand – regardless of what the ingredient is – by continuing to label your chapstick as "hypoallergenic" obviously... It's not. Pointing out that people have been using honey for thousands of years in skin products does not mean that people have not had a reaction when applying honey to the skin's thinner skin for thousands of years. In fact, they can't. Lip balm is a fairly recent invention when it comes to beauty products. I understand that you like honey, but if my lip balms contain honey, my lips will be raw and cut. Of course it is possible that your children and others are having a reaction to any number of the EOS ingredients. In fact, doctors will point out that people with allergies are likely to have more reactions to products made with natural ingredients because it contains a pure and more concentrated form of allergen potential. I'm not saying I don't use products with natural ingredients, they're the guy I prefer. I'm saying they have the potential not to be so big for some people who have an unknown sensitivity to a natural ingredient in them that can be different for different people. Thanks for your comment – But I have to disagree with you. Most skin allergies and irritating reactions come from synthetic ingredients, as they contain more concentrated insulations of natural compounds. Natural and whole ingredients contain different components that work together synergically – to draw a component often makes it unrecognizable by the skin/body and more likely to cause a problem. My lips have been so dry and peeled for days and I couldn't understand. I've been using the EOS coconut version at bedtime and maybe once during the day. I haven't used it in a few days, and my lips return to normal. Rachel, a great informative post! Thank you Jennifer! 🙂 Great article. Thank you so much for sharing your personal experience. I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for reading and taking the time to comment 🙂Hello Rachel, I am Brazilian but currently living in Spain, in the cold winter I had been exaggerating the EOS lips balm and for 3 weeks the corner of my lips began to bite, with a dry and darker look. Then I stopped him because I thought he might be too weak for that kind of winter dryness so I started using Dexpantenol to relieve him. I didn't know about this lawsuit, but it's good to know what was causing it. Thank you! I hope you feel better soon Danielle! Thank you for reading 🙂I'm glad you found it valuable Natalia and I feel that your son experienced symptoms like my daughters did Alternativa I hope the company makes significant changes in its formula in the light of all these people who have adverse reactions! –Rachael This is so shocking to me because for the last 3 weeks my lips and my lips have been so dry and peeled every day and I couldn't find out why! We both use EOS! I am a green beauty blogger and usually quite demanding with the products so I am absolutely outraged that this supposed organic balm is what is causing my lips untapped! I even thought it might have been eczema because it's been excessive! I'll throw it away now and I'll never use it again. Thanks for sharing this.
